From the very beginning of the game you will be disappointed. The intro is
slow and boring, You finally get to the island and it too becomes slow and
boring. Did Konami believe that if they included a female fighter type character
named Rummy complete with thong and huge er ah . BREASTS. that'd we'd be inclined to play this sorry excuse for a "game?!?" Your
main character, Mouse, gets into situation after saying that word or was it
his musical instrument, well it was in a dialog box as there is NO speech in
the game.
Mouse is a traveling musician that has been hired to play at a royal wedding. He also happens to be a thief. Well, evil is lurking in the form of an evil sorcerer that casts a spell over the place that causes the same day to repeat over and over ala Bill Murray's cinematic masterpiece Ground Hog Day. Because of this evil magic spell the wedding day cannot take place. Oh dear!
All of this is fine and good except that the game is terribly boring, slow and bland to look at. Added to this is the fact that the game loves to load. yep, the screen goes black with a loading screen as you move about a town or area. It does this a lot folks. Doesn't the PS2 have any memory?!?! To make things worse, this is one of those time-specific RPG games where you must be a certain location at a certain time. This makes for a lot of hurry up and wait segments. Fortunately, it is not real time as the clock is much quicker than a normal one. I guess we should be thankful for the little things.
For a PS2 title it does nothing to prove it. This game looks pretty much like A PSX title. The graphics are washed out, lacking any detailed textures. The polygon models are simple too. Camera angles can get really bad as well.
Musically, the game is odd. Ranging from orchestra style songs to jazz numbers it is a weird mix. Some of the tunes were really grating. I ended up turning down the volume. There are sound effects in the game. Weeeee..
To help the newcomer to RPGS (if you are a newcomer to this genre please do not play this game or you'll never want to take a chance on an RPG again!) the combat system features an AI assist mode. Otherwise, the combat aspects are probably the only bright spot in an otherwise awful game.
There is a lot to see for those with no life of their own. There are around 10 characters with which to interact, over 160 enemy characters (I'll have to take Konami's word for this) and plenty of magic spells to cast for those with the time and patience to see this game through to its final conclusion. Me, I cannot put myself through it. I will not finish this game. I'd rather pick fleas off of a rabid dog.
