If you love retro gaming and were a fan of Activision when the Atari 2600 ruled the home video game world you really owe it to yourself to pick up this fantastic collection now available for the Sony PlayStation 2.

This compilation includes over 45 different games, some that were never released. All the hits that you loved and hated are included, from River Raid, Pitfall, to some of the lesser known games. As a bonus, there are even a few Imagic games.

Activision did not just put a bunch of games on the CD to play they went the extra distance. There are many game modes that take the original game and give it a added dimension or mode graphically. Some are quite insane! Plus, Activision included lots of those classic TV commercials, art and even the manuals for the game on the disc. Oh, and the classic 80's music is a real mood setter.

The visual layout is superb. You choose the virtual game cartridge from the game rack to play. You can adjust settings and add special video effects once they've been unlocked. Unlocked you say? Yes. Each game has several goals. If you meet that goal you unlock either a new graphical mode, a commercial or other special feature. This adds tons of replay value to the collection.

The PlayStation controller works quite well for most of the games. Especially if they relied on the standard Atari controller. However, a few of the games were designed for the Atari game paddle are not quite up to the task. That's really the only gripe that I have and it is really nothing more than a nit pick as there was little that could have done to fix that. I'm glad that the included those games.

Activision Anthology is a great title. For under $30 it is a real bargain. I applaud Activision in the way that they've handled these treasures. Perhaps someday they'll consider offering a collection based on the Atari 5200/Atari 400/800. I can dream can't I?
