Captain Tomaday - Neo Geo Conversion Project

Hello Everyone,

Captain Tomaday was released in 1999 for the Neo Geo MVS System. Visco, for some reason, did not release this quirky vertical scrolling shooter for the home Neo Geo system. The game features colorful, bright and downright wacky graphics, some of the best seen on the Neo Geo.  Amazingly, it is only 122 megs!  I've had a lot of fun playing the game on the MVS system but it really deserves a place as part of my personal Neo Geo home library. What's a fella to do?  Well..  since I had a loose Japanese cart in "very used" condition and I recently picked up a nice English Kit I figured I'd put that Japanese cart to good use..

I went for a straight forward conversion. This is a standard chip swap / jumper conversion. No wires, no trace cuts are needed. The sacrificial home cart for this project is Fatal Fury 3. Please, a moment of silence for this fine, over produced game.  Some of you may wonder why I used FF3 instead of a older cartridge. The short answer is that there are two V roms on this game. The V1 is 32 megs. If there had been only one then I could have done some voodoo similar to what was done with Money Puzzle Exchanger. The second V rom complicates that matter. Therefore, I opted for the clean Fatal Fury 3 conversion.

The Insert and Label

The insert and label were creating using bits from the MVS flyer (Remember, I've got an English kit too). I photocropped the Captain Tomaday character and drew in the details that were missing from the MVS artwork, mostly around the T-dude's right foot.  I also recolored the logo.

Remove the V, P, S, M, and C chips from the Sacrifice NGH boards.
Remove the V, P, S, M and C chips from the Captain Tomaday MVS cartridge. Place them in their corresponding locations on the sacrifice NGH boards. Solder them up nice and clean, take your time. Congratulations, you're almost done.  The CHA board is ready, but we'll need to make some block adjustments to the PROGBK1Y board.   You'll need to remove the jumper block JB3. You'll need to place a jumper block on JB5. Remove Resister Block R6. Add resister block to R3. The currect jumper setting are found in the table below.

Here are the correct "J" jumper settings, insert and label. (Dig that tiny TFT display!):
